US weekly rail traffic declines 2.6% as chemicals, coal carloads get off track

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has reported US rail traffic down 2.6% Y/Y to 496,526 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending Aug. 06, 2022. Total carloads for the week were 230,573 , down 1.6% while intermodal volume was 265,953 containers and trailers, down 3.4% Y/Y. Overall, North America weekly rail traffic fell 0.7% Y/Y to 682,600 carloads and intermodal units, reflecting the combined volumes of U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads. 4 of the 10 US carload commodity categories saw gains during the week, which included grain, up 1,809 carloads, to 19,916; non-metallic minerals, up 633 carloads, to 34,409; and farm products excl. grain, and food, up 378 carloads, to 15,618. On the other side, miscellaneous carloads were down 2,260 carloads, to 7,901; chemicals, down 1,385 carloads, to 32,287; and coal, down 1,076 carloads, to 65,812. Canadian railroads reported  74,899 carloads for the week, up 3.2%, and 73,082 intermodal units, up 6.7%; Mexican railroads reported 22,161 carloads, up 4.8%, and intermodal units 15,932, up 2.7% Y/Y. Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) reported beat on both lines in its second quarter's earnings results. Other Related Tickers: Canadian National Railway (CNI), CSX Corp.
