Unity Group LLC's (NASDAQ:UNIT) 30% Dip In Price Shows Sentiment Is Matching Revenues
Unity Group LLC (NASDAQ:UNIT) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 30% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 16% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, considering around half the companies operating in the United States' Telecom industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.3x, you may still consider Unity Group as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.8x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Unity Group Has Been Performing
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Unity Group has been relatively sluggish. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Unity Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 5.2% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 47% per year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 140% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's understandable that Unity Group's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
Unity Group's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Unity Group maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
