When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For example, the The LGL Group, Inc. (NYSEMKT:LGL) share price has soared 186% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. Then again, the 9.5% share price decline hasn't been so fun for shareholders.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the five years of share price growth, LGL Group moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. Indeed, the LGL Group share price has gained 86% in three years. In the same period, EPS is up 42% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 23% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. So you might conclude the market is a little more cautious about the stock, these days.
