Unless you borrow money to invest, the potential losses are limited. But if you pick the right business to buy shares in, you can make more than you can lose. For example, the Zepp Health Corporation (NYSE:ZEPP) share price has soared 124% return in just a single year. Better yet, the 130% gain over the last thirty days has shareholders excited. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 22% in three years.

On the back of a solid 7-day performance, let's check what role the company's fundamentals have played in driving long term shareholder returns.

Zepp Health isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last year Zepp Health saw its revenue shrink by 39%. We're a little surprised to see the share price pop 124% in the last year. It just goes to show the market doesn't always pay attention to the reported numbers. It's quite likely the revenue fall was already priced in, anyway.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Zepp Health shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 124% over the last year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 14% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Zepp Health better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Zepp Health , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
