UTStarcom Holdings (NASDAQ:UTSI) Is In A Good Position To Deliver On Growth Plans
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether UTStarcom Holdings (NASDAQ:UTSI) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

How Long Is UTStarcom Holdings' Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. As at December 2023, UTStarcom Holdings had cash of US$50m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was US$4.7m. So it had a very long cash runway of many years from December 2023. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
Is UTStarcom Holdings' Revenue Growing?
Given that UTStarcom Holdings actually had positive free cash flow last year, before burning cash this year, we'll focus on its operating revenue to get a measure of the business trajectory. While it's not that amazing, we still think that the 12% increase in revenue from operations was a positive. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how UTStarcom Holdings is building its business over time.
How Hard Would It Be For UTStarcom Holdings To Raise More Cash For Growth?
Notwithstanding UTStarcom Holdings' revenue growth, it is still important to consider how it could raise more money, if it needs to. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$26m, UTStarcom Holdings' US$4.7m in cash burn equates to about 18% of its market value. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
Is UTStarcom Holdings' Cash Burn A Worry?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about UTStarcom Holdings' cash burn. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. Its weak point is its cash burn relative to its market cap, but even that wasn't too bad! Considering all the factors discussed in this article, we're not overly concerned about the company's cash burn, although we do think shareholders should keep an eye on how it develops. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for UTStarcom Holdings (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
