Here's Why I Think NETGEAR (NASDAQ:NTGR) Is An Interesting Stock
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like NETGEAR (NASDAQ:NTGR). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is NETGEAR Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Over the last three years, NETGEAR has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, NETGEAR's EPS shot from US$0.83 to US$1.95, over the last year. Year on year growth of 136% is certainly a sight to behold. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). The good news is that NETGEAR is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.1 percentage points to 5.9%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are NETGEAR Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own NETGEAR shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have US$30m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 2.3% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Does NETGEAR Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
NETGEAR's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering NETGEAR for a spot on your watchlist. Even so, be aware that NETGEAR is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
