Strong week for Identiv (NASDAQ:INVE) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of three-year loss
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Identiv, Inc. (NASDAQ:INVE) share price has gained 14% in the last three months. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Regrettably, the share price slid 70% in that period. So it is really good to see an improvement. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.
The recent uptick of 12% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
Identiv wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
Over the last three years, Identiv's revenue dropped 30% per year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. With no profits and falling revenue it is no surprise that investors have been dumping the stock, pushing the price down by 19% per year over that time. When revenue is dropping, and losses are still costing, and the share price sinking fast, it's fair to ask if something is remiss. It could be a while before the company repays long suffering shareholders with share price gains.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective
Identiv shareholders are down 12% for the year, but the market itself is up 14%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 5% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Identiv .
