Stock Analysis

Those who invested in Smartsheet (NYSE:SMAR) five years ago are up 57%

The main point of investing for the long term is to make money. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But Smartsheet Inc. (NYSE:SMAR) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 57% over five years, which is below the market return. Looking at the last year alone, the stock is up 8.8%.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

Check out our latest analysis for Smartsheet

Smartsheet isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last 5 years Smartsheet saw its revenue grow at 33% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. It's nice to see shareholders have made a profit, but the gain of 9% over the period isn't that impressive compared to the overall market. That's surprising given the strong revenue growth. Arguably this falls in a potential sweet spot - modest share price gains but good top line growth over the long term justifies investigation, in our book.

A Different Perspective

Smartsheet shareholders are up 8.8% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 9% over five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
