C3.ai, Inc.'s (NYSE:AI) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 8.2x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 4.5x and even P/S below 1.7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does C3.ai's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
C3.ai certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

C3.ai's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 19% gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 67% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 24% as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 24%, which is not materially different.
In light of this, it's curious that C3.ai's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that C3.ai currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
