Possible Bearish Signals With Manhattan Associates Insiders Disposing Stock

Many Manhattan Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ:MANH) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Manhattan Associates

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Vice President of Professional Services - Americas, J. Gantt, for US$1.5m worth of shares, at about US$257 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$200. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Manhattan Associates insiders own 0.9% of the company, currently worth about US$107m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Manhattan Associates Insiders?

The fact that there have been no Manhattan Associates insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Manhattan Associates insider transactions don't fill us with confidence.
