Do InterDigital's (NASDAQ:IDCC) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?
It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

InterDigital's Improving Profits
InterDigital has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Impressively, InterDigital's EPS catapulted from US$1.80 to US$3.16, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 76% year-on-year growth like that.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The music to the ears of InterDigital shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 23% to 34% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are InterDigital Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own InterDigital shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they hold US$40m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 1.9% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Is InterDigital Worth Keeping An Eye On?
InterDigital's earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. This level of EPS growth does wonders for attracting investment, and the large insider investment in the company is just the cherry on top. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. Based on the sum of its parts, we definitely think its worth watching InterDigital very closely.
