Is Fortinet (FTNT) Offering Value After Recent Share Price Weakness
- If you are wondering whether Fortinet shares are priced attractively today, it helps to step back and separate short term noise from what the business might be worth over time.
- The stock closed at US$78.05 most recently, with a 1.7% decline over the last 7 days, a 6.5% decline over 30 days, a roughly flat 0.2% return year to date, and longer term returns of an 18.7% decline over 1 year, 61.3% over 3 years and 164.5% over 5 years.
- Recent price moves have played out against a backdrop of ongoing attention on cybersecurity spending and how customers prioritise network security solutions. News flow has often focused on how security vendors are positioning their platforms and services. This helps frame how investors think about Fortinet's competitive position and the risk and reward trade off in its current share price.
- Fortinet currently has a valuation score of 5/6, which reflects how it screens against a set of value checks. In the next sections we will walk through the key valuation methods behind that score, then finish with a different way of thinking about valuation that can be even more useful when you are deciding what to do next.
Find out why Fortinet's -18.7% return over the last year is lagging behind its peers.
Approach 1: Fortinet Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis
A Discounted Cash Flow model projects a company’s future cash flows and then discounts them back to today’s value, to estimate what the business might be worth per share right now.
For Fortinet, the model uses Free Cash Flow to Equity. The latest twelve month free cash flow is about $2.10b. Analysts and extrapolations feed into a two stage forecast, with projected free cash flow reaching about $4.10b in 2030, based on a mix of analyst estimates for the earlier years and Simply Wall St extrapolations further out.
Bringing these projected cash flows back to today gives an estimated intrinsic value of $101.82 per share using this DCF approach. Compared with the recent share price of $78.05, this implies the shares trade at a 23.3% discount to that estimate. On this model alone, the stock therefore screens as undervalued.
Result: UNDERVALUED
Our Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis suggests Fortinet is undervalued by 23.3%. Track this in your watchlist or portfolio, or discover 881 more undervalued stocks based on cash flows.
Approach 2: Fortinet Price vs Earnings
For profitable companies, the P/E ratio is a useful way to think about what you are paying for each dollar of current earnings. It gives a quick read on how the market is weighing a company’s earnings against others in the same space.
What counts as a “normal” or “fair” P/E depends on how investors see growth potential and risk. Higher expected earnings growth or lower perceived risk can support a higher P/E, while lower growth expectations or higher risk usually point to a lower P/E.
Fortinet currently trades on a P/E of 30.98x. That sits close to the broader Software industry average P/E of 32.70x, and below the peer group average of 63.92x. Simply Wall St’s “Fair Ratio” for Fortinet is 34.79x. This is its proprietary estimate of an appropriate P/E given factors such as earnings growth, profit margins, industry, market cap and specific risk profile.
This Fair Ratio goes further than simple peer or industry comparisons because it adjusts for the company’s own fundamentals and risk characteristics rather than relying only on what other stocks trade at. Compared with the Fair Ratio of 34.79x, Fortinet’s actual P/E of 30.98x suggests the shares are trading below that modelled level.
Result: UNDERVALUED

Upgrade Your Decision Making: Choose your Fortinet Narrative
Earlier we mentioned that there is an even better way to understand valuation, so let us introduce Narratives. In Narratives you spell out your story for Fortinet and the platform turns that story into a set of revenue, earnings and margin forecasts, connects those to a fair value, and then lets you compare that fair value with today’s price, all inside Simply Wall St’s Community page that millions of investors use. Each Narrative updates as new news or earnings arrive so you can see, for example, one Fortinet Narrative that assumes a fair value around US$99.03 based on higher profitability and another closer to US$87.04 that bakes in more conservative margins and growth. This gives you clear, side by side views of how different perspectives on the same company lead to different conclusions about whether the current price looks attractive or not.

Druckenmiller says cheap money's days are numbered. Boring, self-funding companies could be the opportunity.

Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced. A business at three times leverage with nothing due until 2031 is in a completely different position from the same ratio rolling next year. Screen on weighted average maturity and the schedule behind it.
In my view, Insurance companies are best positioned for this.
