Here's Why I Think Fortinet (NASDAQ:FTNT) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Fortinet (NASDAQ:FTNT). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Fortinet's Improving Profits
In the last three years Fortinet's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Fortinet boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from US$2.32 to US$2.73, in the last year. I doubt many would complain about that 18% gain.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that Fortinet is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.5 percentage points to 18%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Fortinet Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
We haven't seen any insiders selling Fortinet shares, in the last year. So it's definitely nice that Lead Independent Director William Neukom bought US$19k worth of shares at an average price of around US$127.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Fortinet bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$3.6b. Coming in at 15% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So it might be my imagination, but I do sense the glimmer of an opportunity.
Should You Add Fortinet To Your Watchlist?
One positive for Fortinet is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. On top of that, we've seen insiders buying shares even though they already own plenty. That makes the company a prime candidate for my watchlist - and arguably a research priority. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 1 warning sign for Fortinet that you should be aware of.
As a growth investor I do like to see insider buying. But Fortinet isn't the only one. You can see a a free list of them here.
