Cipher Mining (NASDAQ:CIFR) Is Making Moderate Use Of Debt

David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. Importantly, Cipher Mining Inc. (NASDAQ:CIFR) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Cipher Mining's Net Debt?

The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at December 2024 Cipher Mining had debt of US$32.3m, up from none in one year. On the flip side, it has US$5.59m in cash leading to net debt of about US$26.7m.

How Strong Is Cipher Mining's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Cipher Mining had liabilities of US$131.8m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$41.7m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$5.59m in cash and US$34.9m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$133.0m.

Since publicly traded Cipher Mining shares are worth a total of US$1.16b, it seems unlikely that this level of liabilities would be a major threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Cipher Mining's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Check out our latest analysis for Cipher Mining

Over 12 months, Cipher Mining reported revenue of US$151m, which is a gain of 19%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. We usually like to see faster growth from unprofitable companies, but each to their own.

Caveat Emptor

Over the last twelve months Cipher Mining produced an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss. Indeed, it lost US$41m at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled US$391m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. To that end, you should learn about the 4 warning signs we've spotted with Cipher Mining (including 1 which is concerning) .
