Akamai Technologies Insiders Sold US$3.0m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Over the past year, many Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Akamai Technologies
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Co-Founder F. Leighton for US$2.0m worth of shares, at about US$92.68 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$101. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. If someone buys shares at well below current prices, it's a good sign on balance, but keep in mind they may no longer see value. Happily, the Akamai Technologies insider decided to buy shares at close to current prices. F. Leighton was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Akamai Technologies Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Akamai Technologies shares. Specifically, Executive VP & CTO Robert Blumofe ditched US$284k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Akamai Technologies insiders own 1.8% of the company, currently worth about US$277m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. But since Akamai Technologies is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious.
