Genesco Inc.'s (NYSE:GCO) 34% Dip Still Leaving Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over Its P/SRatio
Genesco Inc. (NYSE:GCO) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 34% share price drop in the last month. Indeed, the recent drop has reduced its annual gain to a relatively sedate 2.3% over the last twelve months.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Genesco's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Specialty Retail industry is similar at about 0.4x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Genesco Performed Recently?
Genesco could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to lift, which has kept the P/S from declining. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.
Keen to find out how analysts think Genesco's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Genesco's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. This isn't what shareholders were looking for as it means they've been left with a 4.0% decline in revenue over the last three years in total. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 0.7% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 4.7% growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's curious that Genesco's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Final Word
Genesco's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Given that Genesco's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.
