Insiders At Ulta Beauty Sold US$4.7m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
In the last year, many Ulta Beauty, Inc. (NASDAQ:ULTA) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Ulta Beauty Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Kecia Steelman, for US$3.9m worth of shares, at about US$529 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$408. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Ulta Beauty insiders own about US$36m worth of shares. That equates to 0.2% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
