Baozun (NASDAQ:BZUN shareholders incur further losses as stock declines 11% this week, taking three-year losses to 85%
As an investor, mistakes are inevitable. But really big losses can really drag down an overall portfolio. So consider, for a moment, the misfortune of Baozun Inc. (NASDAQ:BZUN) investors who have held the stock for three years as it declined a whopping 85%. That would be a disturbing experience. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 65% in a year. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 43% in the last 90 days. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.
Since Baozun has shed CNÂ¥44m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over the three years that the share price declined, Baozun's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 23% in the twelve months, Baozun shareholders did even worse, losing 65%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 13% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
