Is Now The Time To Put One Liberty Properties (NYSE:OLP) On Your Watchlist?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in One Liberty Properties (NYSE:OLP). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

Are One Liberty Properties Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own One Liberty Properties shares worth a considerable sum. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at US$87m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 14% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Should You Add One Liberty Properties To Your Watchlist?

One positive for One Liberty Properties is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for One Liberty Properties, but the fun does not stop there.
