We're A Little Worried About Century Therapeutics' (NASDAQ:IPSC) Cash Burn Rate
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Century Therapeutics (NASDAQ:IPSC) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

Does Century Therapeutics Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. In June 2023, Century Therapeutics had US$156m in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was US$121m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 15 months from June 2023. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is Century Therapeutics Growing?
It was quite stunning to see that Century Therapeutics increased its cash burn by 255% over the last year. While that isa little concerning at a glance, the company has a track record of recent growth, evidenced by the impressive 86% growth in revenue, over the very same year. In light of the data above, we're fairly sanguine about the business growth trajectory. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can Century Therapeutics Raise Cash?
While Century Therapeutics seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Century Therapeutics' cash burn of US$121m is about 137% of its US$88m market capitalisation. That suggests the company may have some funding difficulties, and we'd be very wary of the stock.
Is Century Therapeutics' Cash Burn A Worry?
On this analysis of Century Therapeutics' cash burn, we think its revenue growth was reassuring, while its cash burn relative to its market cap has us a bit worried. Considering all the measures mentioned in this report, we reckon that its cash burn is fairly risky, and if we held shares we'd be watching like a hawk for any deterioration. On another note, Century Therapeutics has 5 warning signs (and 2 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
