We're Hopeful That Cidara Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CDTX) Will Use Its Cash Wisely
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. Indeed, Cidara Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CDTX) stock is up 154% in the last year, providing strong gains for shareholders. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
In light of its strong share price run, we think now is a good time to investigate how risky Cidara Therapeutics' cash burn is. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

Does Cidara Therapeutics Have A Long Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Cidara Therapeutics last reported its balance sheet in September 2022, it had zero debt and cash worth US$53m. Importantly, its cash burn was US$22m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of about 2.4 years from September 2022. That's decent, giving the company a couple years to develop its business. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Well Is Cidara Therapeutics Growing?
At first glance it's a bit worrying to see that Cidara Therapeutics actually boosted its cash burn by 4.6%, year on year. The silver lining is that revenue was up 33%, showing the business is growing at the top line. Considering the factors above, the company doesn’t fare badly when it comes to assessing how it is changing over time. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can Cidara Therapeutics Raise Cash?
Even though it seems like Cidara Therapeutics is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$145m, Cidara Therapeutics' US$22m in cash burn equates to about 16% of its market value. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.
Is Cidara Therapeutics' Cash Burn A Worry?
Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Cidara Therapeutics' cash runway was relatively promising. Considering all the factors discussed in this article, we're not overly concerned about the company's cash burn, although we do think shareholders should keep an eye on how it develops. On another note, Cidara Therapeutics has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
