LiveOne, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:LVO) Shares Leap 31% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story
LiveOne, Inc. (NASDAQ:LVO) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 31% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 72%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about LiveOne's P/S ratio of 1.5x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Entertainment industry in the United States is also close to 1.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does LiveOne's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Recent times have been advantageous for LiveOne as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, LiveOne would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 16% gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 109% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 24% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 12%, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's curious that LiveOne's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What Does LiveOne's P/S Mean For Investors?
LiveOne's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Looking at LiveOne's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. This uncertainty seems to be reflected in the share price which, while stable, could be higher given the revenue forecasts.
