Intrepid Potash's (NYSE:IPI) growing losses don't faze investors as the stock rallies 11% this past week
While Intrepid Potash, Inc. (NYSE:IPI) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 11% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. In fact, the share price is 253% higher today. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Ultimately business performance will determine whether the stock price continues the positive long term trend.
Since the stock has added US$38m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Intrepid Potash has made a profit in the past. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable. So we might find other metrics can better explain the share price movements.
On the other hand, Intrepid Potash's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 5.1% over the last five years. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Intrepid Potash has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 31% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 29%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
