Royal Gold (NASDAQ:RGLD) sheds 8.7% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
Royal Gold, Inc. (NASDAQ:RGLD) shareholders have seen the share price descend 11% over the month. But don't let that distract from the very nice return generated over three years. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 27% in that time.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 8.7%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Royal Gold was able to grow its EPS at 2.5% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is lower than the 8% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is feeling more optimistic on the stock, after the last few years of progress. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Royal Gold's TSR for the last 3 years was 32%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Royal Gold shareholders are up 10% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 3% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. If you would like to research Royal Gold in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
