Insiders Give Up US$50k As Ramaco Resources Stock Drops To US$8.36

The recent price decline of 10% in Ramaco Resources, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:METC) stock may have disappointed insiders who bought US$125.0k worth of shares at an average price of US$14.00 in the past 12 months. Insiders purchase with the hope of seeing their investments increase in value over time. However, due to recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth US$74.6k, which is not great.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Ramaco Resources

The Vice-Chairman Evan Jenkins made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$125k worth of shares at a price of US$14.13 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$8.36). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Evan Jenkins.

Insider Ownership Of Ramaco Resources

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 11% of Ramaco Resources shares, worth about US$49m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
