Balchem's (NASDAQ:BCPC) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
Balchem Corporation (NASDAQ:BCPC) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 11% in the last month. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. In that time, it is up 55%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 92%.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 5.0%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, Balchem managed to grow its earnings per share at 8.6% a year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 9% average annual increase in the share price. That suggests that the market sentiment around the company hasn't changed much over that time. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Balchem the TSR over the last 5 years was 59%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Balchem shareholders are up 11% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 10% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy.
