Celanese Exposed To Natural Gas And Other Costs

In its specialty and commodity chemicals operations, Celanese faces higher feedstock and energy costs due to globally higher prices of natural gas - from which it makes methanol - and oil. The company just acquired Exxon Mobil’s thermoplastics/elastomers business for $1.15 billion. At a current $17 billion market capitalization, Celanese offers a modest 1.8% dividend. Its board authorized an additional $1 billion in share repurchase in July 2021.

Celanese Stock Is Seeing Cyclical Sentiment Headwinds, But Long-Term Fundamentals Look Good

Celanese has done a good job of leveraging record acetyl chain prices, as the V-shaped industrial recovery has combined with weaker supply conditions. Thus far, competitive capacity additions in the acetyl chain have been restrained and responsible, and management believes that the markets will remain tight through 2025/26. Longer term, management is looking to continue to leverage its strong feedstock capabilities through expanded value-added product offerings, with a focus on autos (EVs particularly), electronics, healthcare, and sustainability. Core revenue growth in the range of 4% and improved long-term margin leverage can drive a healthy return from today's price, but short-term cyclical sentiment challenges remain a risk.
