The Progressive Corporation (NYSE:PGR) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected

There wouldn't be many who think The Progressive Corporation's (NYSE:PGR) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 19x is worth a mention when the median P/E in the United States is similar at about 17x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

We've discovered 1 warning sign about Progressive. View them for free.

Recent times have been advantageous for Progressive as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

How Is Progressive's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Progressive's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 52% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 303% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 4.1% per annum during the coming three years according to the eleven analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 10% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Progressive is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What We Can Learn From Progressive's P/E?

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Progressive currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
