Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like HCI Group (NYSE:HCI). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

HCI Group's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, HCI Group has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Outstandingly, HCI Group's EPS shot from US$4.89 to US$13.33, over the last year. Year on year growth of 172% is certainly a sight to behold. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. HCI Group shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 15% to 31%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in our book.

Are HCI Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that HCI Group insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$217m. Coming in at 18% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like HCI Group with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b is about US$5.5m.

HCI Group's CEO took home a total compensation package worth US$3.7m in the year leading up to December 2023. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is HCI Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

HCI Group's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. HCI Group certainly ticks a few boxes, so we think it's probably well worth further consideration.
