Insiders At Arch Capital Group Sold US$12m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
Many Arch Capital Group Ltd. (NASDAQ:ACGL) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Arch Capital Group
The CEO & Director, Nicolas Alain Papadopoulo, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$5.3m worth of shares at a price of US$87.52 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at below the current price (US$88.20). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 8.4% of Nicolas Alain Papadopoulo's holding.

Does Arch Capital Group Boast High Insider Ownership?
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Arch Capital Group insiders own about US$920m worth of shares (which is 2.8% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
So What Do The Arch Capital Group Insider Transactions Indicate?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Arch Capital Group shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Arch Capital Group insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
