We wouldn't blame Utz Brands, Inc. (NYSE:UTZ) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Chinh Chu, a company insider, recently netted about US$25m selling shares at an average price of US$16.66. That sale reduced their total holding by 29% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Notably, that recent sale by Chinh Chu is the biggest insider sale of Utz Brands shares that we've seen in the last year. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$16.12. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$126k for 9.50k shares. But insiders sold 1.60m shares worth US$27m. Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
