Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (NASDAQ:KDP) Shares Slammed 26% But Getting In Cheap Might Be Difficult Regardless

The Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (NASDAQ:KDP) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 32% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, Keurig Dr Pepper's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 19x and even P/E's below 11x are quite common. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Keurig Dr Pepper hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For Keurig Dr Pepper?

Keurig Dr Pepper's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 28% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 26% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 31% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we can see why Keurig Dr Pepper is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Keurig Dr Pepper's P/E

Despite the recent share price weakness, Keurig Dr Pepper's P/E remains higher than most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Keurig Dr Pepper's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Keurig Dr Pepper (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
