Insiders At REX American Resources Sold US$3.2m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
Many REX American Resources Corporation (NYSE:REX) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Chairman & Head of Corporate Development, Stuart Rose, for US$1.2m worth of shares, at about US$59.65 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$36.85. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 5.6% of REX American Resources shares, worth about US$38m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
