Helmerich & Payne (NYSE:HP) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of $0.25

Helmerich & Payne, Inc. (NYSE:HP) will pay a dividend of $0.25 on the 27th of February. This makes the dividend yield 3.4%, which will augment investor returns quite nicely.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Helmerich & Payne's stock price has increased by 41% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Helmerich & Payne's Long-term Dividend Outlook appears Promising

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Even while not generating a profit, Helmerich & Payne is paying out most of its free cash flows as a dividend. Paying a dividend while unprofitable is generally considered an aggressive policy, and with limited funds retained for reinvestment, growth may be slow.

Analysts expect a massive rise in earnings per share in the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 8.1%, so there isn't too much pressure on the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $2.75, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.00. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 9.6% per year. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.

The Company Could Face Some Challenges Growing The Dividend

With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. We are encouraged to see that Helmerich & Payne has grown earnings per share at 51% per year over the past five years. While the company is not yet turning a profit, it is growing at a good rate. If profitability can be achieved soon and growth continues apace, this stock could certainly turn into a solid dividend payer.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. In general, the distributions are a little bit higher than we would like, but we can't ignore the fact the quickly growing earnings gives this stock great potential in the future. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. As an example, we've identified 2 warning signs for Helmerich & Payne that you should be aware of before investing. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
