Looking at Chevron Corporation's (NYSE:CVX ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Chevron

The Independent Director, Enrique Hernandez, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$164 each. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$143. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Enrique Hernandez.

Enrique Hernandez ditched 10.20k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$163. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Does Chevron Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.03% of Chevron shares, worth about US$65m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Chevron Tell Us?

The fact that there have been no Chevron insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Chevron insiders. But it's good to see that insiders own shares in the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 1 warning sign with Chevron and understanding this should be part of your investment process.
