Coterra Energy Executive Vice President of Business Development Stephen Bell Sells 54% Of Holding
Some Coterra Energy Inc. (NYSE:CTRA) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Executive Vice President of Business Development, Stephen Bell, recently sold a substantial US$2.7m worth of stock at a price of US$23.00 per share. Probably the most concerning element of the whole transaction is that the disposal amounted to 54% of their entire holding.
Coterra Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Notably, that recent sale by Stephen Bell is the biggest insider sale of Coterra Energy shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$24.69, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was 54% of Stephen Bell's holding.

Does Coterra Energy Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Coterra Energy insiders own 1.5% of the company, currently worth about US$277m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
