Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Regional Management (NYSE:RM). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Regional Management Increasing Earnings Per Share?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Who among us would not applaud Regional Management's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 46%, compound, over the last three years? That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. I note that Regional Management's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Regional Management maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 21% to US$441m. That's a real positive.

Are Regional Management Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Regional Management shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have US$30m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. That amounts to 7.3% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

Should You Add Regional Management To Your Watchlist?

Regional Management's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Regional Management for a spot on your watchlist. Even so, be aware that Regional Management is showing 5 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those make us uncomfortable...

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
