Usually, when one insider buys stock, it might not be a monumental event. But when multiple insiders are buying like they did in the case of Compass Diversified (NYSE:CODI), that sends out a positive message to the company's shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Compass Diversified Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when insider Heidi Simon bought US$399k worth of shares at a price of US$20.16 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$17.59). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Compass Diversified insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. There was some insider buying at Compass Diversified over the last quarter. Executive Vice President & CFO Stephen Keller bought US$33k worth of shares in that time. It's good to see the insider buying, as well as the lack of recent sellers. However, in this case the amount invested recently is quite small.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Compass Diversified insiders own 1.7% of the company, worth about US$25m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
