Why We're Not Concerned About Marqeta, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MQ) Share Price

Marqeta, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MQ) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.9x may look like a poor investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Diversified Financial industry in the United States have P/S ratios below 2.6x. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Marqeta's Recent Performance Look Like?

Marqeta hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Marqeta's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Marqeta's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 28%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 65% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 13% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 9.8% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Marqeta is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Marqeta's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Marqeta that you need to be mindful of.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
