It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Futu Holdings (NASDAQ:FUTU). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Futu Holdings' Improving Profits

Futu Holdings has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Impressively, Futu Holdings' EPS catapulted from HK$16.91 to HK$31.66, over the last year. Year on year growth of 87% is certainly a sight to behold. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. It's noted that Futu Holdings' revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. EBIT margins for Futu Holdings remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 34% to HK$9.1b. That's a real positive.
