With EPS Growth And More, Vail Resorts (NYSE:MTN) Makes An Interesting Case
It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Vail Resorts (NYSE:MTN). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Vail Resorts' Earnings Per Share Are Growing
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Vail Resorts managed to grow EPS by 4.9% per year, over three years. This may not be setting the world alight, but it does show that EPS is on the upwards trend.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Vail Resorts is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 7.6 percentage points to 23%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are Vail Resorts Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$10b company like Vail Resorts. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$111m. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Vail Resorts, with market caps over US$8.0b, is around US$13m.
Vail Resorts offered total compensation worth US$6.6m to its CEO in the year to July 2022. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
Should You Add Vail Resorts To Your Watchlist?
As previously touched on, Vail Resorts is a growing business, which is encouraging. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Vail Resorts, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. You should always think about risks though.
