Insiders At Carriage Services Sold US$767k In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
The fact that multiple Carriage Services, Inc. (NYSE:CSV) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
Carriage Services Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Vice President Of Sales, Shane Pudenz, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$578k worth of shares at a price of US$44.36 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$44.05. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.
In the last year Carriage Services insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Insider Ownership Of Carriage Services
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Carriage Services insiders own 2.5% of the company, worth about US$18m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
