Investors Will Want Bowlero's (NYSE:BOWL) Growth In ROCE To Persist
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, Bowlero (NYSE:BOWL) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Bowlero, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.056 = US$167m ÷ (US$3.2b - US$195m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Thus, Bowlero has an ROCE of 5.6%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Hospitality industry average of 9.5%.

How Are Returns Trending?
We're glad to see that ROCE is heading in the right direction, even if it is still low at the moment. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 5.6%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 108%. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
In Conclusion...
In summary, it's great to see that Bowlero can compound returns by consistently reinvesting capital at increasing rates of return, because these are some of the key ingredients of those highly sought after multi-baggers. Considering the stock has delivered 19% to its stockholders over the last three years, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Bowlero (of which 1 is potentially serious!) that you should know about.
