Airbnb, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ABNB) Price Is Out Of Tune With Earnings
When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 16x, you may consider Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 22.3x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.
Airbnb certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Airbnb's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 153% gain to the company's bottom line. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 8.7% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth per annum, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we find it concerning that Airbnb is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a very good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Airbnb's P/E
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Airbnb currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E for a company whose earnings are forecast to decline. When we see a poor outlook with earnings heading backwards, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
