Grocery Outlet Holding Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In fact, the recent purchase by Lead Independent Director Erik Ragatz was not their only acquisition of Grocery Outlet Holding shares this year. Earlier in the year, they paid US$20.91 per share in a US$2.1m purchase. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$11.32. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.
In the last twelve months insiders purchased 431.50k shares for US$7.5m. But they sold 162.32k shares for US$4.1m. Overall, Grocery Outlet Holding insiders were net buyers during the last year. The average buy price was around US$17.31. I'd consider this a positive as it suggests insiders see value at around the current price. Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 3.9% of Grocery Outlet Holding shares, worth about US$43m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
