David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Forward Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:FORD) makes use of debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Forward Industries's Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Forward Industries had debt of US$1.60m at the end of September 2021, a reduction from US$4.11m over a year. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$1.41m, its net debt is less, at about US$189.6k.
How Strong Is Forward Industries' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Forward Industries had liabilities of US$7.21m due within a year, and liabilities of US$5.20m falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had US$1.41m in cash and US$8.76m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$2.24m.
Of course, Forward Industries has a market capitalization of US$16.4m, so these liabilities are probably manageable. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. Carrying virtually no net debt, Forward Industries has a very light debt load indeed. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Forward Industries's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, Forward Industries reported revenue of US$39m, which is a gain of 13%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, Forward Industries had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. Indeed, it lost US$765k at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. Another cause for caution is that is bled US$596k in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we do consider the stock to be risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For example - Forward Industries has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
When all is said and done, sometimes its easier to focus on companies that don't even need debt. Readers can access a list of growth stocks with zero net debt 100% free, right now.
