Funko, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:FNKO) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 30%
Funko, Inc. (NASDAQ:FNKO) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 30% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 66% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, considering around half the companies operating in the United States' Leisure industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.1x, you may still consider Funko as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Funko Performed Recently?
Recent times haven't been great for Funko as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. Perhaps the market isn't expecting future revenue performance to improve, which has kept the P/S suppressed. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. If not, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Funko's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 9.1%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 21% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 0.4% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 2.5%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Funko is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Final Word
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Funko's P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
It's clear to see that Funko maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
