Executive Chairman of Clarus Warren Kanders Buys 4.9% More Shares
Clarus Corporation (NASDAQ:CLAR) shareholders (or potential shareholders) will be happy to see that the Executive Chairman, Warren Kanders, recently bought a whopping US$936k worth of stock, at a price of US$3.24. There's no denying a buy of that magnitude suggests conviction in a brighter future, although we do note that proportionally it only increased their holding by 4.9%.
Clarus Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Notably, that recent purchase by Executive Chairman Warren Kanders was not the only time they bought Clarus shares this year. Earlier in the year, they paid US$4.19 per share in a US$1.2m purchase. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$3.45. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.
In the last twelve months insiders purchased 740.80k shares for US$2.8m. But they sold 70.00k shares for US$313k. In total, Clarus insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Insider Ownership Of Clarus
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Clarus insiders own 18% of the company, worth about US$22m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Clarus Insiders?
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Clarus we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Clarus. When we did our research, we found 2 warning signs for Clarus (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that we believe deserve your full attention.
