Some Confidence Is Lacking In Clarivate Plc's (NYSE:CLVT) P/S
It's not a stretch to say that Clarivate Plc's (NYSE:CLVT) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" for companies in the Professional Services industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Clarivate's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Clarivate's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Clarivate's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.7%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 36% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.3% per year over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 6.9% growth per year, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we find it concerning that Clarivate is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
The Key Takeaway
It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
While Clarivate's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline. With this in mind, we don't feel the current P/S is justified as declining revenues are unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If the declining revenues were to materialize in the form of a declining share price, shareholders will be feeling the pinch.
