Optimistic Investors Push Clarivate Plc (NYSE:CLVT) Shares Up 27% But Growth Is Lacking
Clarivate Plc (NYSE:CLVT) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 37% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Clarivate's P/S ratio of 1.2x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Professional Services industry in the United States is about the same. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Clarivate's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Clarivate could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Clarivate's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.5%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 20% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 0.7% each year as estimated by the nine analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 7.2% per annum, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Clarivate's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Clarivate's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Our check of Clarivate's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue isn't bringing down its P/S as much as we would have predicted. With this in mind, we don't feel the current P/S is justified as declining revenues are unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.
